Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tanpan Room?

Tanpan Room is an online platform where you can improve your negotiation skills in a fun, interactive way. Whether you're looking to boost your confidence for salary negotiations, develop effective communication strategies for everyday transactions, or simply want to hone your haggling skills, we've got you covered.

Key Features:

  • Engage in negotiations with scored outcomes to learn what works and what doesn't
  • Practice negotiation techniques in a low-pressure setting
  • Develop essential skills for personal and professional success

Why does it exist?

Learning how to negotiate (like most skills) is not particularly difficult, but finding a place to practice and improve can be challenging. Tanpan Room is a space where you can experience the challenge of finding an outcome that works for both parties.

Do you use AI?

No. Your counterparty in most negotiations is another human being, so we want to help you prepare for these situations.

How does it work?

Join a negotiation round and get matched with another player. You'll receive a specific role (like buyer or seller) complete with your objectives and background information. Your counterpart gets the corresponding role with their own goals.

Negotiate with your partner to reach an agreement, then both players report the final outcome. Once the round closes, you'll receive a performance score based on how well you achieved your objectives. Compare your results with other players who had the same role to see how your negotiation skills stack up!

How long do sessions typically last?

Most scenarios are designed to be completed within 30 minutes.

How do I communicate with the other person?

You can talk to your negotiation partner directly through the in-game text chat or voice call features available on the game page.

Can I play with friends or only strangers?

Currently, you are randomly matched with another negotiator.

How does the rating system work?

Let's take an example where there are 20 participants in a round. That means there will be 10 buyers and 10 sellers. If you are assigned the role of a buyer, your results will be compared with the other 9 buyers. At a high level, if you do better than average, your rating will improve. If your results are below average, your rating will decline.

When you sign up, you are assigned a rating of 1500. Your rating is updated at the end of each round using an outcome-based system that is similar to chess ratings.

What happens if I cannot reach an agreement with my counterpart?

If the two parties cannot agree on an outcome, both parties will receive a score of zero for this round. Similar to real life, it often happens that two parties would be better off finding a mutually beneficial outcome, but they are unable to do so.
